![]() Our commitment to offer products and packaging with the highest social and environmental standards continues to improve and we are pleased to now package all of our fresh flower bouquets in an Eco-friendly, 100% biodegradable PLA sleeve. This new alternative sleeve originates from a 100% renewable resource, field corn. They are a more environmentally friendly and responsible alternative to traditional plastic sleeves. The technology to produce PLA is done by NatureWorks LLC®. PLA is made from the fermentation of sugar (dextrose) milled from ordinary field corn. Corn is the most abundantly grown source of natural sugar in the world. Essentially during photosynthesis, corn plants remove carbon from the air and store it in grain starches. The starches are broken down into natural plant sugars. Through a process of fermentation and polymerization, the carbon and other elements in these natural sugars to create a clear plastic called polylactide (PLA) that can be shaped into a variety of bottles, containers, trays, film to make flower sleeves and other packaging. Peer-reviewed and published life-cycle analysis (LCA) date shows that PLA requires less fossil fuel resources and generates fewer than traditional plastics (PET) and it is the world's first greenhouse-gas-neutral polymer.
